Physician Q & A
Why did you decide to become a physician?
As a teenager, I was fascinated by genetics and birth. In the '70s there were very few women in medicine. I thought we could add to the field.
What are your clinical areas of interest?
After all these years I still get a charge out of hearing the heartbeat of a baby for the first time and their scream as they come into this world. Colposcopy of the vagina, valva and cervix have been my recent areas of study.
What is your philosophy of patient care?
We work as a team – office and hospital nurses, the patient and myself to provide the best health care possible.
How do you spend your free time? (family, hobbies, interests, volunteer activities, etc.)
I am active in my church serving on a recent call committee, the memorial committee and the hand bell choir. For several year, I have served on the board of Project Hope, a food pantry in North Omaha. My newest passion is spinning.
Provide an interesting anecdote about you.
Keeping a low C-section rate is important to me, so I’ll try many things to help women deliver vaginally. One of the most helpful things to do to help a baby who seems to be stuck is to have mom play “tug of war” with me. That many times spins a baby around into the best pelvic diameters to deliver. Not too long ago, we were using this maneuver at 2 a.m. Unfortunately, mom let go sending me across the room landing on the floor and hitting my head. After I delivered the baby (vaginally) my next stop was the ER for stitches in my head.
