Why did you decide to become a physician?
I grew up in Hastings, NE and watched my father practice as a small town family physician. This was my first exposure to what being a physician is all about. There were certainly times (during a busy call, or getting called in the middle of the night) when I observed the demanding aspect of being a physician. I also observed the satisfaction that his job gave him, and the way he was able to help his patients. I had a pretty good idea that I wanted to go to medical school toward the latter part of high school.
What are your clinical areas of interest?
I'm interested in quality improvement. As hospitalists, we're in a unique position to see systems function within a hospital, and understand how these systems can function in a better way.
What is your philosophy of patient care?
I want to make sick people better, and when possible, empower them to stay better.
How do you spend your free time? (family, hobbies, interests, volunteer activities, etc.)
Aside from this, I've been into almost everything. I currently enjoy running and cycling. I ran the Detroit Marathon this last year, and tend towards running races, bike rides, triathlons, etc... I grew up playing tennis and basketball fairly competitively. I enjoy picking up new sports, or revisiting old ones, so I've played just about anything you can think of. I play guitar, enjoy photography, and like going to concerts. We have family and good friends in the area that we like to spend time with.
Provide an interesting anecdote about you.
I started dating my wife when I was 15. We've been together ever since.
